Creating High-Level Designs for Effective System Development.

Hlevel Architecture – Creating a High-Level Design

Michaela founded Hlevel Architecture to focus on unique residential design, small commercial projects and custom ADU’s with a modern holistic approach to the project’s natural context. The firm is committed to providing the best solutions specific to each project.

Interfaces should be identified and designed early. Novel interfaces may be difficult to implement and will add integration costs and schedule time.

System Requirements

A high-level design (HLD) is an overview of a system, product, or service that helps supporting components be compatible. It should describe the platform, any significant commercial, legal, environmental, safety, and security requirements and any assumptions and constraints. It should also provide brief consideration of alternative systems configurations.

HLD documents should be clear and concise, containing non-technical to mildly technical descriptions of the systems that need to be designed, their interfaces, and how they will fit together. Specifying designs too early in the project may impose unnecessary development costs or lead to obsolescence before deployment.

The HLA standard provides a framework for connecting (federating) computer simulations from different computers running different operating systems, using different programming languages, and with various architectures into a single unified simulation. It is used by the US Department of Defense to support analysis, engineering, and training in a wide range of military and civilian applications. It consists of an Interface Specification and a Federate Reference Model.

HLD Evaluation

Creating an HLD requires significant time and effort. It’s often a multi-iteration, highly customized, bespoke process that can’t be justified at this early stage of the project. Stakeholders need to be able to make a decision on the requirements, Statement of Work and scope before investing in this effort.

HLDs are usually a set of diagrams, such as block diagrams, entity-relationship diagrams or class diagrams that describe the overall architecture of the system. The HLD should be clearly linked to the system’s requirements, and provide a bird’s eye view of how the solution will function once it is implemented.

New guidelines for reprocessing flexible endoscopes in health care facilities call for sterilization rather than high-level disinfection to reliably rid the devices of dangerous microorganisms. The change could have a profound impact on the safety and quality of patient care. Previous studies of interdependent urban critical infrastructure systems (CISs) have failed to incorporate CIS domain knowledge or adequately model CISs’ interdependencies.

HLD Selection

Creating a High-Level Design is like making a big plan for how your software will work. It will help you find problems early and prevent them from becoming a big problem later on. Once the HLD is complete, you can start designing the low-level design (LLD). LLD is more detailed and focuses on how to write the code. It also includes navigational details and technical requirements.

The process of selecting an architecture is a critical step in the overall system development. The goal is to make sure the selected architecture meets all of the project’s requirements. During this step, the system engineers evaluate several alternatives using analytical tools to determine which one is best for the project. This evaluation takes into account functionality, performance, and technology constraints. The result is a detailed HLD that will guide the coding and testing phases of the project. The HLD will also include a clear path for the implementation of the system’s functionality.

HLD Implementation

In complex transformation projects it is critical to have a framework and process in place for E2E HLD deliverables. A well-defined architecture design blueprint, ideally supported by an E2E Requirements Traceability Matrix, will ensure a quality end-to-end solution that is designed and delivered in a lean and just-in-time manner.

HLD provides a broad overview of the system, including its main components and their interactions, the main algorithms that will be used, and the data structures that will be implemented. The HLD should be reviewed by the stakeholders to ensure that it is accurate, understandable, and meets the requirements of the project.

HLD can also provide useful information if the design falls short of meeting the requirements. It is important to consider this when making a decision about which architecture to carry forward, and what alternative fully-compliant designs to use instead.

Transforming the built environment to combat climate change.

The AIA 2030 Commitment

Buildings, their operations and their materials create 42% of global greenhouse gases. Architecture 2030 aims to beat this by transforming the built environment from its current role as major contributor to climate change into a key part of the solution.

A new, intuitive interface brings the principles of energy-efficient planning and design to your fingertips. Create Swatches and In-Depth Information Pages for easy reference.

The 2030 Challenge

Architecture 2030’s mission is to “rapidly transform the built environment from a major contributor of greenhouse gas emissions to a central part of the solution to the climate crisis.” Specifically, they aim to reduce fossil fuel consumption and GHG emissions in buildings through the changing the planning, design, and construction of cities, communities, infrastructure, and buildings. They also pursue the regional development of a built environment that can manage climate change impacts, preserve natural resources, and access low-cost renewable energy.

One of the main ways they’re doing that is by developing a set of targets for low carbon and resilient design – from the regional level down to individual building elements. These are called the 2030 Palette.

Another of their tools is the AIA+2030 Professional Development Series, which gives architects the knowledge they need to work on projects that meet the 2030 goals. Finally, they created the 2030 Commitment to provide a structure for tracking and reporting progress.

The 2030 Palette

The 2030 Palette is an internationally focused free interactive tool to empower architects, planners and designers with a framework for world-wide development of buildings that consume 50-80% less fossil fuel energy than their existing counterparts, complement and preserve sensitive ecosystems and access site renewable energy resources. The 2030 Palette is a catalyst for achieving The 2030 Challenge and transforming the built environment from a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions into a central solution for climate change.

The online platform offers “swatches,” or strategies, that address a range of building types and climate zones. The swatches include recommendations on how to reduce embodied carbon through material efficiency, reusing existing buildings (which has significantly lower embodied carbon than new construction), designing walkable communities, passive design approaches for shading, reflected daylighting and solar glazing and more.

The swatches also provide guidance on how to mitigate energy consumption through building envelope optimization using FenestraPro, which can calculate the resulting end-to-end energy use and carbon emissions based upon specific site and energy-related characteristics.

The 2030 Districts

After five years of growth with oversight from Architecture 2030, the fifteen established Districts have now developed their own non-profit. Together the Districts represent over 300 million square feet of buildings.

The Districts are grassroots efforts to implement strategies that reduce fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, while stimulating the creation of resilient communities. They address climate change through a comprehensive suite of initiatives including educational resources, advocacy, and the formation of 2030 Districts Network.

The Network provides the framework for collaboration between local private and public stakeholders. Through the Network, the Districts can exchange best practices, leverage the purchasing power of their members to secure reduced costs and influence national policy on building water and energy efficiency. Each District has its own distinct approach – Seattle’s works with city officials to develop greener economic incentives, Cleveland runs a green design competition, and Ithaca promotes more aggressive building regulations. All of these efforts work together to reduce energy consumption, improve indoor air quality and reduce transport emissions.

The 2030 Commitment

The built environment contributes 40% of annual global greenhouse gas emissions, and the AIA 2030 Commitment offers architects a way to publicly show their dedication to a carbon-free future and encourage others to join them. The program outlines real and attainable targets for the building sector to curb climate change, and it requires firms participating in the Commitment to establish energy efficiency as an essential tenet of their design philosophy.

This year, ZED’s predicted energy use intensity (pEUI) savings in its design portfolio reached a record-setting 92.6%, surpassing the goal of 70% reduction set by the 2030 Challenge for Energy-Efficient Planning and Design. The latest AIA 2030 Commitment Summary also indicates that many design firms are starting to incorporate lifecycle analysis into their process in order to understand embodied carbon impacts and plan for low operational carbon as well.

Additionally, Seattle’s District has been working with city officials to develop environmental incentives, Cleveland has been holding green building competitions, and Ithaca is implementing greener building regulations. This groundwork is crucial, as it enables the performance goals of each firm to improve over time and ultimately help reach the 2030 Challenge’s carbon-neutral goals.

Architectural Styles in the 20th Century: Evolution, Modernism, and Postmodernism

Styles of Architecture in the 20th Century

Throughout history building has evolved out of the dynamics between needs (shelter, security, etc.) and means (building materials, available skills).

In the nineteenth century iron and steel became widely used, decreasing costs and allowing for large-scale and creative buildings. Sullivan took new industrial materials and pushed the idea of form following function to its logical extreme, creating buildings that were almost monolithic.

The International Style

Although the tenets of modern architecture were first articulated in Europe in the 1920s, it was not until World War II that they caught on in America. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Walter Gropius were among a group of leading architects from the Bauhaus who fled to America after the school closed, and they published several projects that were deemed examples of the International Style. These buildings used flat, hard surfaces and glass walls, eliminated ornament, and incorporated advanced building technologies.

Other American architects also exhibited elements of this design style, most notably Raymond Hood’s Daily News Building in New York City and the McGraw-Hill Building in Detroit, which were composed of asymmetrical setbacks. Frank Lloyd Wright, however, eschewed the International Style, and his designs emphasized the use of natural materials and the integration of the buildings with their surroundings. Nevertheless, he had already embraced some aspects of modernism through the Arts and Crafts Movement that lasted between 1880 and 1910.

The Neo-Gothic Style

During the neo-Gothic movement, many enlightened amateurs such as Horace Walpole and William Beckford embraced medieval culture and architecture. Their lavish architectural follies like Strawberry Hill and Fonhill Abbey show the public’s newfound enthusiasm for the Middle Ages. In contrast, the Utilitarians viewed this style as antiquated and not suited to modern life.

When the government announced that the winning design for the Houses of Parliament would be designed in the Gothic Revival style, it set a precedent for imperial buildings worldwide. Across the colonies, men with connections to the architects that created Parliament designed similar public structures in the same architectural form.

These new Gothic structures emphasized stone and vertical features, including carved turrets and pointed windows. A classic example is the Whalen Building in downtown Portland, built for a logging magnate in 1913 with decorative carvings and mullions. The carved gable ends also feature Gothic-style ornamentation. This building is a perfect example of the Neo-Gothic architecture that was popular in this period.

The Modern Style

With the rapid growth of technology, engineers, and building materials came a shift in how architects approached buildings. They became less concerned with reviving historical styles and instead focused on creating structures that were unique, experimental, and innovative.

Skyscraper construction increased. The architecture firm of McKim, Mead, and White favored a three-part facade design that resembled the bases, shafts, and capitals of classical columns. This style was also used by Frank Lloyd Wright in buildings such as Robie House and Fallingwater.

After World War I, Modernism emerged as an avant-garde architectural movement with moral, philosophical, and aesthetic underpinnings. Pioneering Modernist architects sought to develop a completely new style that would be suitable for a postwar social and economic order that was focused on meeting the needs of the middle and working classes. The Modernists promoted an analytical approach to function, a rejection of ornamentation, and an openness to structural innovation. Louis Sullivan popularized the aphorism “Form follows function” to emphasize utilitarian simplicity in architecture.

The Postmodern Style

One of the most controversial styles of architecture in the 20th century, Postmodernism reached a peak of eclectic non-conformity in the 1970s and 1980s. This architectural style is characterized by a mix of many different styles, often incorporating elements that are not connected or harmonious in any way. A 1966 book by the American architect Robert Venturi called Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture was a key influence on this movement. In it, Venturi argued that Modernism was based on a misunderstanding of the ambiguities and contradictions of the architectural history of Rome and other ancient buildings, and also the architecture of popular culture like the houses on the average American street.

Postmodernist architects sought to solve the problems of modernism, communicate meanings with ambiguity and exhibit sensitivity to their buildings’ context. The latter could mean incorporating vernacular design features, such as the use of brick or ceramic tile, in new designs, or responding to neighboring buildings with color, such as Mexican architect Luis Barragan’s bright sunlight colors on his buildings.

Architects working towards sustainable and eco-friendly buildings and designs.

How Architecture Affects the Environment

With buildings and construction responsible for 39% of energy-related carbon emissions, architects are at the forefront of finding ways to make structures more sustainable. This involves using recycled and Earth-friendly materials, incorporating renewable energy, and more.

Architects are also exploring biomimetic designs that mimic natural processes. For example, one project aims to emulate a Namibian fog-basking beetle’s physiology to harvest water.

Materials

Building materials are a large part of the embodied energy of a building. Using sustainable and recycled materials is key to decreasing a buildings environmental impact.

Architects can also reduce the use of fossil fuels in their designs by using passive design techniques such as maximizing fenestration, improved air circulation, and natural lighting. This allows a building to minimize its dependence on non-sustainable energy sources such as air conditioning and heating.

Retrofitting existing buildings is another way architects can minimize their environmental footprint. It keeps materials and the embodied carbon they contain in use longer and delays the need for demolition. Architects such as Lacaton and Vassal have become key exponents of this approach.

Finally, designing net-zero buildings that produce as much energy as they consume – if not more – is crucial to combating climate change. This can be achieved through detailed planning and skilled execution. The Posbank tea pavilion in the Netherlands is an excellent example of a building designed to meet these standards. It features a grass roof, sheep’s wool insulation, and rainwater that flushes the toilets!

Energy

While architecture is a highly creative and fulfilling profession, it’s also one of the most energy-intensive. As a result, architects are working hard to make their industry carbon-neutral and use more sustainable materials.

For example, incorporating green roofs, straw bale walls, sheep’s wool insulation, and rainwater toilet flushing can reduce a building’s environmental impact. Also, using energy-efficient light fixtures and heating systems help cut down on the need for artificial lighting and air conditioning.

Another area of green architecture is biophilic design, which aims to connect people with nature through the use of natural elements in buildings. This can be done by maximizing fenestration, enhancing indoor ventilation, and utilizing solar energy and renewable energies.

Finally, architects can reduce the amount of water used in their buildings by designing more efficient plumbing fixtures, which cuts down on waste and helps protect our shared water supply. They can also use more recycled or rainwater-sourced water and minimize the stress on existing water sources by building with drought-resistant landscaping.

Water

Architects can use their skills to make the built environment more eco-friendly. This includes reducing the amount of energy used in buildings, minimizing waste and pollution, and using natural materials in building design. This is referred to as green or sustainable architecture. It can include techniques such as improving insulation, maximizing fenestration, and increasing ventilation to improve air quality inside buildings.

Many architects are concerned about climate change. They understand that their work affects the environment and want to ensure that they are doing their part to help. They have made efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of their buildings by minimizing energy consumption, using recycled materials, and incorporating natural light and plants. Some even practice biophilic design, which seeks to connect people with nature by integrating natural elements into building designs. They can also use their skills to protect the environment by preventing soil erosion and maintaining water quality. They can also create structures that capture and reuse rainwater.

Waste

The goal of sustainable architecture is to limit the negative impact that buildings have on the environment throughout their entire life cycle. That means using earth-friendly materials, incorporating renewable energy sources and reducing air pollution inside the building. It also involves improved insulation that prevents heat from dissipating, increasing ventilation and other techniques to improve the indoor environment.

Many architects now use software to have a better picture of the environmental impacts of their designs before construction. This can include estimating the amount of materials needed, the water used and how much carbon will be emitted during construction and operation. There has been a movement toward regenerative architecture, which aims to create buildings that generate more energy than they use. This includes projects like Mikhail Riches’ housing project and Snohetta’s Powerhouse Telemark office that utilise air-source heat pumps, solar panels and energy-efficient lighting to reduce their emissions.

A new movement, non-extractive architecture, goes even further. It questions whether any kind of building can be good for the environment when it inevitably depletes natural resources somewhere.

Simpler application architecture with database system embedded, ideal for simple applications but can become problematic as complexity grows

One Tier Architecture Example

One-tier architecture is the simplest application architecture used. It can only work if the database system is embedded because non-embedded databases cannot run in an individual process.

The 1 tier architecture is ideal for simple applications where scalability and security are not primary concerns. However, it can become a problem as the application grows in complexity.

Presentation Layer

The presentation layer, or level 6, in the OSI model ensures that data transferred between devices is presented in a common format for application layers to understand. It also formats and compresses data, allowing it to be transmitted more efficiently over the network. For example, it may encode ASCII codes into EBCDIC code to make it easier for different computers to read the information.

It can also translate complex data structures into flat byte strings for transmission and storage. This process is called serialization and is very important in ensuring that communication between two different devices can be completed.

It can also establish the connection between a device and a network server, and it can create security protocols that protect against SQL injections and other attacks. It also provides a way for end-users to interact with databases, including creating, modifying and viewing database content. The presentation layer can be separated from the business and data layers if desired, although this can add to complexity and may lead to a loss of speed and efficiency.

Business Layer

The Business Layer is responsible for the internal procedures of the application. For example, if the presentation layer sends a request to get customer information, it is up to the business layer to know how to format that data for display on the screen and what modules in the system are needed to process the request.

The business layer should use techniques that decouple it from the presentation and database layers as much as possible. The best way to do this is by using a model-to-text mapping technique such as SOAP XML and tools like Entity Framework and Hibernate for.NET.

This layer includes technology passive structure elements that are manipulated by behavior, such as business processes and functions, and represents concepts that a company thinks about in its domain. It also contains representations of business objects that are used in the application. The Business Layer is a key component in achieving scalability. Separating the business logic from the database and presenting it to the user through the presentation layer increases application performance and scalability.

Data Layer

The Data Layer is where all the data that’s collected in your digital context goes. It carries information that will be used by all the other analytics tools on your website and in your marketing campaigns. It should be built with a clear idea of the business goals and objectives you have in mind for each area you want to track.

The most common use for the Data Layer is for ecommerce tracking and personalization. Depending on the setup and the tools you are using, it could contain visitor information, product and sales data or any other kind of data that you want to make available for all your analytics platforms.

The Data Layer is a complex part of the architecture, and it should be treated as such: as a living model that’s constantly in flux. It needs to be optimized, elaborated, divided, conjoined, cleaned and refactored as often as possible, to keep up with the changing needs of the business.

Database Layer

The database layer performs the physical implementation of the data access logic. This layer uses the DBMS’s native database API and supports both late and early binding. Late binding allows for the database layer to preserve data in its original form until it is requested by a higher level, while early binding allows the lower layers to pass a request directly to the database layer.

In the 1 tier architecture, the user interface, business and data access layer reside on the same machine. This architecture is often used for single users or for applications that need fast response time from the database. This architecture is also cost-efficient, since it does not require the installation of additional hardware.

In the 3-Tier architecture, the client application program communicates with an application server that in turn communicates with the DBMS system. The end-user is unaware of any existence beyond the application layer and the DBMS system. This architecture increases security by preventing direct interaction between the client and the database system.
